Women of Substance
The Breast Cancer Haven was set up in 1997 by Sara Davenport. It offers free support, information and complementary therapies to anyone affected by breast cancer.
The idea for the charity came to Sara following the experience of her children's nanny, Wendy Ricketts, who was diagnosed with breast cancer. Sara was concerned by the lack of emotional support and information available to people with breast cancer. Believing that "no-one should have to face breast cancer alone", Sara sold her art business and put all of her energy into creating Breast Cancer Haven.
Breast Cancer Haven intends to open a network of Havens across the UK until a Haven is accessible from anywhere in the country. Five more Havens are already in plan, and next year the charity will open the doors of its new centre in Leeds - first direct's home town.
